The highly competitive encounter, played on Saturday, January 17, ended goalless after regulation time and extra time, before Nigeria prevailed in a dramatic penalty shootout inspired by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From kickoff, the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff<\/strong> delivered the intensity and quality expected of two African football giants. Nigeria controlled large periods of the first half and believed they had taken the lead when Akor Adams headed home from close range. However, a VAR review ruled out the goal for a foul in the buildup, leaving the Super Eagles frustrated but undeterred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half saw Nigeria maintain pressure while Egypt threatened on the counter through Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
