Nigeria’s Super Eagles wrapped up their continental campaign on a positive note after edging Egypt to claim the bronze medal in the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff. The highly competitive encounter, played on Saturday, January 17, ended goalless after regulation time and extra time, before Nigeria prevailed in a dramatic penalty shootout inspired by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
From kickoff, the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff delivered the intensity and quality expected of two African football giants. Nigeria controlled large periods of the first half and believed they had taken the lead when Akor Adams headed home from close range. However, a VAR review ruled out the goal for a foul in the buildup, leaving the Super Eagles frustrated but undeterred.
The second half saw Nigeria maintain pressure while Egypt threatened on the counter through Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Ademola Lookman also had a goal disallowed for offside, further heightening the tension in the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff. Despite several half-chances and moments of individual brilliance, neither side found the breakthrough in open play.

As the game progressed, substitutions and injuries slowed the tempo, with both coaches searching for a winning formula. Nigeria remained compact at the back, while Egypt pushed forward in the closing minutes. With no goals after extra time, the match was decided from the penalty spot.
The shootout belonged to Nigeria, with Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, and Ademola Lookman calmly converting their kicks. Egypt’s hopes faded as Stanley Nwabali produced two crucial saves, denying Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah to seal victory in the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff. Although Nigeria missed one penalty, Nwabali’s heroics ensured the Super Eagles finished the tournament on the podium.
Nwabali’s commanding display earned him the Man of the Match award and underlined his growing importance to the national team. With this result, Nigeria closed AFCON 2025 proudly, securing third place and restoring belief ahead of future international competitions.
