Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign has suffered a major setback as star striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the crucial clash against South Africa.
The Napoli forward sustained a shin bruise during the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, where he was forced off in the 37th minute and replaced by Cyril Dessers. Despite receiving treatment, Osimhen reportedly woke up with significant discomfort, and medical assessments confirmed he will not travel with the squad to South Africa.
The decisive qualifier is scheduled for September 9, 2025, and Nigeria will now have to rely on other attacking options in Osimhen’s absence. The Super Eagles’ only goal in the Rwanda match was scored by Tolu Arokodare, but the pressure will now be on the rest of the squad to deliver in Johannesburg.
Osimhen’s absence is a huge blow to Nigeria’s hopes of securing qualification, as he remains one of Africa’s most prolific strikers.
